Hello from Kentucky 115

Hello everyone, my name's Brandi and I am the mother to 3 children of my own and 4 adopted step-children. I have 2 dogs (cocker spaniel/shih tzu) 2 cats (siamese/tabby) and 1 parrot (amazon). All of my animals are rescues except our shih tzu. I am a very busy woman but I can not complain because my children (and animals) are all very well behaved and I get compliments every day about how respectful my 7 children are. In addition to my very full house we recently bought an old farmhouse (always a dream of mine) and we are in the process of a complete renovation (all done on our own). My life is very fulfilling and busy.

Now to my fur/feather kids. I rescued my cocker spaniel and siamese 3 years ago and rescued a baby tabby kitten 6 months ago. We rescued our amazon approx 4 years ago. I have always been a passionate boxer and cocker spaniel fan. However, for several years I have dreamed of owning a shih tzu. Last month my hubby told me that he would get me a shih tzu and for me to start looking. I decided to begin research for a breeder and what color pattern I wanted. During my research I noticed that many of the tzu's in my areal were black/white or brown/white. I wanted to be different and strive for a color that was not common in my area. I wanted a unique puppy that was unlike all the others.

I finally found a breeder with a lot of brindle, black and blue pups and did not breed her babies but once a year. I went to visit and met with the parents. I was happy to see that all her fur kids lived in her home and not in cages. They were all very socialized and loved and I was very pleased with what I saw. She had 2 pups that I was in love with and after spending time with them I chose a brindle/white pup and got to bring him home yesterday. The only thing I did not like about this particular breeder (and didn't realize this until after I was home with my furkid) is that she let him go at only 6.5 weeks. I would have preferred to wait until the 8 week time. Unfortunately, he is already home with me and I don't want to make the long drive back again.

I have to say I am very pleased with my choice. I was not looking for a show quality pup but rather a pet only pup and I could not have chose one with a better attitude. Not to mention the coloring is very odd to me because I have never seen a shih tzu other than black/white or brown/white.

He has officially been here 24/hours and not had one single accident in the house. He was put in his crate at 10 pm and went until 7 am without any accidents. but he DID NOT like the crate situation as it was the first time he was crated. Sad

Hi Brandi and welcome to the forum. You sound as if you have your hands full with all those fur babies and & children as well. Your new puppy is adorable, he has the same official colouring as Simba who you can see in my avatar. He is brindle and white, but as he has grown (he is just over 2 now), he has changed to a silver grey and white, with some tan hairs in a few places. I do agree 6.5 weeks is very young to be taken from his Mum, but you sound like you know what is going on, and will keep an eye on him to make sure he is OK.

We all look forward to getting to know you on the forum, and thanks for posting photos of your beautiful new pup, can we some of your other fur babies as well please? You will soon learn, we all love photos here! Smile

Hi there Brandi - my word you have your hands full Very Happy

Welcome to the forum and it is lovely to meet you and see your beautiful furkid family teddy hug welcome teddy hug

I have to say how beautiful your animals are - and Garcia looks a real cutie pie Very Happy Yes 6.5 weeks is way too young to be leaving his mom but at least he is with you and he also has another dog for company too. It is not just company they also learn dog behaviour at this age - so he will be fine in your capable hands with a lovely cocker to show him the ropes.

BTW I personally prefer the American Cocker to the British one - I like their head and I love the compact sort of outline they have.

I would love to live in a renovated farm house - though I would be hopeless at doing the renovations myself lol!

You may well find that Garcia ends up very dark later on. The brindles are teh most interesting as they change colour throughout their lives. They usually go silver grey as they reach adulthood but later on in life they can become as dark as black.

I had two litter sisters before Josh and Isabella one was pure jet black and white the other I thought was a gold and white like her dad but by 12 months old she had started to turn silver and white - quite pale silver but by the time they were 9 my vet could not tell them apart - he thought they were both black and white - tho to me Opal was still a sort of grey perhaps the colour of steel.xxxxx

I am finding that I love the brindle shih tzu not just because I chose that color pattern but they just have a different look about them. My daughter says its like a secret club lol
What drew me to Garcia was the white mo-hawk like color on his head.
He is doing very well he went all night without any potty accidents, and only had one accident today because he got excited a little too much at the cat lol

I really take pride in my furkids. They are my hobby so to speak. I spend most of my days alone while the kids are involved in school activities so they really keep me company.

As for the house, it has been an adventure. It was built in the 1930's and someone bought it and added a 2nd story of 2 bedrooms. Each bedroom is 32 feet long by 18 feet wide. with the exception of one guest room we put the 2 small boys in. The entire house is right at 4000 square feet. SO far we have completely updated and renovated the kitchen/dinning/living/and 2 bedrooms. We still have 2 additional bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and the laundry room to renovate. It's been an adventure. lol

Hi and welcome Kentuckymommy I have a brindle - Mali and a gold & white- Tasha. Now Tasha although was very dark when we got her has turned very grey she is almost 3 years old. Mali is a Brindle and has stayed Brindle which is lovely. I agree that 6 1/2 weeks is way to young. I must say I have never been a fan of crates myself, I equate it to not liking to being in a confined space myself. But at least you know he is safe in there. That was very good to go that long and not do anything.

I think you have certainly got your hands full with all that renovating.

Tasha and Mali are BEAUTIFUL Smile
I crate both my dogs at night because our house is so big that our cocker spaniel got stuck upstairs one night and hurt her foot. After that I have been a firm believer in crates when I am not at home or at night. Other than that they can come and go as they please lol

Last night was his 2nd night here with us and still NO ACCIDENTS at all. And when I take him out he does his business and is ready to come inside. I do think he will be the easiest yet to potty train.

We have another shih tzu puppy coming to live with us in a month or so. She will be a rescue that was born with a hernia. She will remain in foster care for a month or so and then come to live with us. I told my husband that after her we will unfortunately not be doing any more rescues three dogs and the parrot are all I can handle lol
The cats are easy because all I have to do is clean the box, feed them and pet them when they want it.

Or let me say that I call her a rescue because of her situation. She is actually coming from a breeder who knows ahead of time she will be born with a hernia and asked if I would take her so I can have her surgery.

To me she will be another rescue for me because I will be helping her :

My two have been out today for a lovely walk to some garden that are open to the public and a rare thing they allowed well behaved dogs on leads so they have had a lot of sniffs today and loved every minute of it. Tasha is just coming t the end of her season so we had to go somewhere wher e we were sure they wouldn't have a lot of dogs. You have been lucky with Garcia two nights without an accident . I remember when we first got Mali she shrieked for 11 nights before she settled down. Then when we got Tasha her first night we had to go into them because one of them was crying and didn't know which one, we found it was Mali objecting to Tasha being there, but we to told her to be quiet very firmly and ever since they have been the best of friends.

Well he has done so well. Today has been hard with potty time. He went all night and went out this morning but the rest of today I have taken him out ever 2 hours and NOTHING Sad he had one accident in the house because one of my children was holding him and let him down while I was changing clothes.

But for 7 weeks to only have 1 accident in 2 days I can not complain. Last night was much better with the crate he cried just a little but was quiet mostly all night.

We are planning to have the girl pup spayed so we won't have the "accidental puppy" worry lol

You are a glutton for punishment methinks wink

I am a great believer in using crates - not to imprison dogs but to ensure their safety. Wghen I had 6 shiddies living together it was really important for me to know where they were at night should we need to get out of the house quickly. I also find that it helps house train puppies and they like somewhere "den-like" to call their own. It reminds them of their nest and will often choose to go into their crates of their own accord - particularly if they are feeling a little under-the-weather. It is imperative for me to have them happy in their crates for travel purposes too as that is the safest way for them to travel. And if you get them used to a crate and then at some point in their lives they have an injury that requires cage-rest (and being shih tzu and into everything and also being long-backed with short legs they are prone to back injuries particularly) then they don't feel as if they are being tortured when they need to stay in there.

That is my opinion anyway kisses

Don't you find they settle better at night when they are babies if they are in a crate too?? I think when puppies have a whole room to sleep in it is a bit too scary for them. I have NEVER had one cry at night when I use a crate.

I think we all love the sound of that house Lesley. I think we should adopt it as our official Whispers residence and all move there!

Garcia is absolutely gorgeous as are all your other fur babies, and it sounds like you will have your hands full when your new baby arrives. She will have a good home with you, that's for sure. Smile

Something happened and the vet checked the dog and discovered it somehow. I saw the vet record but it didn't state if an ultrasound was done or what. All I know is that I will meet with the pups when they are born and go from there.

I do have my hands full but in all honesty I got so use to having a house full when I did fostering for our local shelter that its pretty normal for me. We do a lot of baths and keep the fan plug-in's throughout the house. everyone is so amazed that my home don't smell like a pet shop lol.

as for the house, we fell in love with it. We actually rented it when my husband and I first got married because we were bringing 7 kids together as a family and needed a huge house. I placed an add looking for someone to accept the kids and the fact that I foster animals and a guy replied who went through a divorce and didn't need this big of home. because we loved it so much we bought it off of him last year.
The thing with it is although it's big it don't appear that large because most of the footage is in the bedrooms. We actually tore a wall down and make our kitchen/dinning one huge room separated by a bar and it made it open up so much in here.
