Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
He is currently living with his owners parents as the owner can no longer keep him, The owners parents have other dogs and they also work during the day and he isnt overly keen on being left for long periods. So thats where I come in.
He has come from KC registered lines and has his pedigree but no registration certificate as this cannot be found currently. As im only interested in him as a companion for me, its of little importance. I am going to be travelling to pick him up so its approx three-four hours drive for my poor partner and I will be glad once the day is over as im not ovely keen on any form of long journey.
I have bought a throw over for the sofa as he likes sitting on the sofa and we have no objection to this so hopefully he will soon settle into his new home with his usual home comforts.
I will be awaiting for his nice light colour coat to grow as he has had a summer clip recently.
He has not been neutered or mirochipped, so he will be microchipped once hes had a little time to settle and we will ensure he has his vaccinations if they are overdue or anything.
Just out of interest can anyone assist me with the following things:
I understand that certain chemicals can be toxic easily to a small dog such as a shihtzu and therefore wonder what is the safest flea/tick treatment for a shihtzu to have?
Thanks for your help in advance. Its good to be prepared.

Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
Ah, it sounds to me like this little man is going to have a lovely comfortable life with you. It is good that he is coming from his current owners and not a rescue in many ways, because they can tell you first hand exactly what he likes and doesn't like, which should make the settling in period a lot easier for all of you. Don't think about the journey to collect him, just think of the fun you will have once you get home. Also, the prerequisite of this forum - loads of nice photos please!
I suggest you discuss the flea and worm treatment with your vet. We use Advocate once a month, but different vets will suggest different treatments depending what is about in your area.
Good luck and have loads of fun together, once his character starts to come through and you get to know him, you will be amazed that for such a little dog the character and presence is huge.

Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
I use frontline combo only available from the vets and it is applied every two months xxx he's going to be very happy with you xxx
Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
I also use Frontline Combo which I know can be bought online with a prescription from your vet which rather defeats the idea of buying online, but could be a bit cheaper, baring in mind you also have to pay for the prescription but will last for around 6 months. I am sure he (not sure what his name is) can look forward to a long and happy life with you and your partner. Looking forward to the updates and photos.

I use stronghold. I found it less smelly than advocate.

I will look at Stronghold as I think it isn't a bad idea to change protection now and then in case it doesn't perform as well.

Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
Would think so Victoria as the combo has to have a script so can only be dispensed by a vet. However the ones you can buy is the same drug but it has to be applied every 4 weeks so you need to work out if it is cheaper in the long run (saying that I have had to apply the combo a little more frequently than it says sometimes when fleas are at their worst!!) xxxRooney, Roxy&Pip wrote:Frontline is currently on offer on groupon, this muxt be the normal version?

I use Frontline spot on for dogs. I buy mine from Costco. I get the wormer in tablet form from the vet.

Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
Thank you very much for all the advice. My next question is, that I am looking for a travel crate incase he doesnt travel well in the car, I was thinking about the plastic kind, and I understand he is 17-18 inches in length from his shoulders to his bottom, so Im wondering what size travel crate I should be looking for. I have seen online that size 24 inches is recommended for the metal cages, but I was thinking mmmm, what about his head and tail, will that give him enough room, I'd like himto be able to lay down and be able to stretch out fully if he wishes and have room to turn around and stand up if he wishes, So im thinking, I dont want it to be too big but need it be a good size for him for the journey home. Any advice on the size I may need would be very helpful. Obviously what would suit my basset girls will be too big I should think.

Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
Hi sorry can't answer your question re crate, we use a perfect fit harness (brand name for it) and then a seat belt clip attached to it. I have read that a crate is the safest way to travel though. Good luck! bet you cant wait to pick him up.

Mali had the 'Perfect Fit 'harness and they are brilliant. As she has put.on some weight I bought her the same as Tasha's the Fleece harness so from Dog Games. I must say it is much easier to put on her.

I don't have any experience of crates as I have not used them but Lesley uses them and I am sure she will be able to give you some advice. I expect you are counting the hours down before you collect him. Can't remember if you know his name or not.

I have the Showman dogs Crate. I have the 21 ins EXTRA HIGHT. It measures 21 ins x 15 ins x 21 ins High. One door opening.Mine is gold colour.
I also have the Fabricover to shelter your dog _ Complete with door flaps, and windows.
I also bought the vet beds.
Showman dogs crate. £55. Fabricover. £19. Vetbed £11.
You don't want to get a grate that is too big for the dog OR it will have too much room and be rolling around in it too much.
I think this cage is safe for the dog, when travelling. Hope this is of some help to you.

Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
Thankyou so much for all your help everyone, I will consider all suggestions.
I am due to travel to meet and bring him home on wednesday 27th.
I have come accross a plastic travel carrier which is 23 inches in length in the loft, so perhaps this may be useful, old but has some life left in it. I was concerned if it would be big enough.
I'll have to give it a clean up and i'll take it with me incase.

Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
Not an over excited child at all, just a fur baby mum that wants the best for her baby, like we all do.
I bet you can't wait for next week, I am sure he will be everything you want and more besides. Have loads of fun with him and as I said before, don't forget to take loads of photos for us to see.

Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
Counting the days until collecting my shihtzu boy. Cant wait till Wednesday. Its a three-four hour drive and most will be done on the motorway, which im not looking forward to as I dont enjoy long journeys especially on the motorway, however its the quickest way to get to him and bring him home.
I have been busy getting ready for his preparation, a throw over for the sofa, shallow food and water dishes, a plush cushion to go in a bed, some naturediet trays, a complete dried food, some pedigree gravy bone biscuits, some raw hide twist chews, ID tag, Groomers shampoo and conditioner, and an anti tangle conditioning spray. Just got the collar and lead, and vaccinations, worming and flea treatment, and microchipping to get done, will do all that at the vets.
Cant wait to get him.

Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
Don't think about the journey, just the lovely furry bundle that will be waiting for you at the other end. He might be a bit quiet at first until he settles down and gets to know your routine, but I think he will soon be runninbg round like a loon and making you laugh with his antics!

Re: Shihtzu Lover here!
Hi the little man is here after the journey yesterday.
He was very quiet and well behaved on the way home.
Happily slept with other dogs in kitchen last night where it was cooler, no problems at all, clean all night. woke up at 6:30 to go out but was told to go to bed and he did then at 7:30am was outside in garden. Ate all breakfast, had a bath today and was towel dried then blow dried.
Now laying on sofa snoring its head off with tongue sticking slightly out.
Has been mostly quiet today, had a mad few minutes running around after bath. Other than that seems a nice, quiet steady little dog. Not overly keen at all on the feet being trimmed but we will get around it. Dont seem to be able to upload photo?? will try again shortly.
