Poorly puppy Empty Poorly puppy

Post by Freckles Wed Jul 31, 2013 1:35 pm

Hi everyone,

I have had my beautiful baby boy a week ago today, he is 10 1/2 weeks old. So far he has settled into the family home well and is becoming more and more confident, he has a playing sweet character and I am totally inlove with him. The breeder was feeding all the puppies pedigree puppy food in jelly from cans. She advised I continue to do this but he turned his nose up and was eating less and less every day, having a few tastes then walking away. When I took him to the vet for his second injections I expressed my concerns and the vet gave me a bag of Science Plan dry food, telling me to soak it and feed it to him. He loved it right away and I tried to mix the dry food and pedigree food together. He didn't like that. Anyway this morning he has vomited and had an upset tummy. I called the vet but they didn't seem too worried just said to keep an eye on him. He has had a few sips of water, is playing and sleeping on and off.

I am worried.

Right the first thing is not to panic BUT if you are concerned about him at all get an appointment with the vet and get him checked over.  he doesn't sound too ill to me if he is playing.  If he had a temperature he would look quite miserable and possibly even be shaking.  Make sure he takes water on regularly - if he doesn't drink then use a teaspoon or a syringe and give it to him.  The most important thing is to not let him get dehydrated which can happen very quickly in a little one.
I take it by upset tummy you mean diarrhoea?  If that is the case then don't feed him today.  Then tomorrow try him with a light diet (cooked chicken or fish and rice).
Puppies often have little tummy upsets but they bounce back quite quickly.  You don't say when he had his second vax so I am assuming it is more than a couple of days ago?  If it is closer then that too can upset their tummies a little.
If he continues to vomit or have tummy upset then take him to the vet... don't hesitate if you are worried at all. I know my vet would rather I go in and it be a false alarm.
Once his tummy has settled and you are getting to the end of your bag of science plan you might want to look into getting him onto a better quality food but any change you make needs to be done gently.
If you need any more help or assurance don't hesitate to ask xxxx

Sorry to hear your little puppy is a bit poorly. I would agree with everything Lesley has already said but just wanted to ask if you changed his food over slowly enough as I know they can get upset tummies if their food is changed too quickly. Have to say that I agree that even this food is not very good, despite it being an expensive dry food which you would think to be a good food too. Hope he is better soon teddy hug

As Lesley says, if you are in the least bit worried, go back to the vet and say you want an appointment. With puppies of this age it is important to keep an eye on them when they get any sort of problems like this. It could well be the injection, or change of food that has caused the upset tummy. If he is still playing I wouldn't think it was anything major, but just keep a close eye on him, starve him for 24 hours and then give him some gently boiled chicken and some rice, just a couple of spoonfuls a time but every couple of hours and see how he goes.

Any questions just come and ask. teddy hug

Post by Freckles Thu Aug 01, 2013 3:02 pm

Hi all and thank you so much for your advice it really has been a comfort in the last 24 hours. Chester is much better today. Throughout being poorly he has never lost his playfulness and I have kept a very close eye on him. After speaking with the vet and breeder I cooked some plain chicken and rice which he ate with great enthusiasm. I thought we were over it but today he has still got diarrhea - been twice today. I called the vet again and she said as long as he is eating and playing there is no need to bring him in. Soooooo - sigh. Good thing is my husband is home tonight so he will be able to help my nerves. I think I just love this little boy so much .... my husband and I have not been able to have children even after lots of surgery and IVF so he really does mean the world to us. Ok...am going to try to post a picture, see if I can figure it out. Lots of love xxx

Runny tums can be a bit of a devil to clear up.  Just keep him on a light diet until it sorts itself out.  you can give a few things that might help...one of those things is to mix a little cornflour in the food or you can see if you can get some kaolin from a chemist and give him half a child dose or better still if you can find a pet store that sells kaolin type products such as KAOGEL or  PROKOLIN or a  Montmorillonite based product like DIARSANYL.

You can get these online too and it is not a bad idea to have something in on hand in case he gets another upset tummy ( especially as puppies have a tendency to eat things they shouldn't lol!)
If you have problems posting photos give me a shout and I will send you my email address and will put them on for you - but there are help pages (you will find links to them on the home page Smile )

so sorry to heat about little Chester. I too swear by prokaolin, you can get it from the vet or cheaper on internet. I think because he is so young I would take him to the vet, they seem to be able to give (Magic) injections at this age that seem to do the trick, as well as the prokaolin. Sending lost of well wishes love sue x

Post by Freckles Sun Aug 04, 2013 5:49 pm

Hi everyone and so sorry for the delay in updating you but its been a worrying and stressful weekend. We were at the Vet for ages on Friday and poor Chester was going down hill. Would you believe of all things the vet diagnosed Tapeworm??? I found this very surprising. He was given medication while we were there and we have continued to administer medication twice daily over the weekend to try settle his tummy but the sickness and diarrhea has continued. I have hardly slept too afraid to not be alert if he is sick and needs my help. I have cleaned and washed all weekend, poor baby. Vet said that if he is still no better tomorrow we have to take him back. In the meantime the vet said on Friday to starve him, then yesterday feed him a table spoon of chicken and rice every two hours. He continued to be sick. There has been no vomiting today but still runny poos. He has still got energy and plays for short spurts of time. I hope he is ok through the night. Any thoughts??? I managed to upload a picture of our gorgeous baby boy, love, love, LOVE him xxx

You poor thing and poor Chester as well. Pups are such a worry when they aren't well, and they make us worry so much because we feel so helpless. It sounds as though the poor little chap has a dose of something, but hopefully he has stopped being sick now which is a good sign. Fingers crossed the vet can help with the diarrhea this morning and Chester can start to fight this. The fact he is still playing a bit is really good, it shows he has a strong fight in him.

He is really cute and as Carol says he is a gorgeous colour, it will be interesting to see how it changes as he grows.

Good luck this morning, I have my fingers crossed that Chester is getting better now. Try not to worry, but it's easier said than done, I know  that from experience.teddy hug

OMG I have not heard of a puppy with tapeworm since my first puppy over 30 years ago!  Puppies always have roundworms which lie dormant in the bitch and pass through the milk to her puppies but tapeworm is carried by fleas and ingested. So I can tell you from that the wherever you had little Chester from it was not the most hygienic of places and the dogs are not well cared for Sad

Hope the vet sorts him out this morning - glad he has not been sick that is an improvement and the diarrhoea will take longer to clear up.  Try not to worry as sue says and keep on top of it (by that I mean if the vet says don't come back for 3 days and the next day you are worried then GO BACK teddy hug )

Ok we are home from the vet. Basically the vet is not worried, said to keep Chester on the chicken and rice and let whatever it is work its way out. He is sending the poo sample to be analysed just to be on the safe side. Poor baby pooed in his crate on the way home. I will be cleaning and washing this afternoon. Ugh just want him to be better Sad

In some ways that must be a relief that the vet isn't worried. Have you spoken to the breeder to see what they have to say? Did they tell you what wormer and flea treatment Chester had been receiving and how often when you bought him. I have to say Pedigree Puppy canned food is not what I would consider to be one of the better quality puppy foods to bring a puppy or puppies up on. And neither would I consider Science Plan dog food either. I think the best thing is get Chester sorted with the Chicken & Rice first then I am sure Lesley -Simbalove would give you some advice as to what she would do. I am sure it is going to take a few more days to get this out of his system, but you will get there.

Post by sujay Mon Aug 05, 2013 1:23 pm

It is easier for the vet not to be worried because they aren't emotionally involved, but when it is your puppy in your arms and he has an upset tummy it is a lot harder. We all understand how you are feeling, so don't worry if you want to come on here and have a moan or are worried. We have all been through similar things so totally understand your fears.

Poor little Chester must be frightened and can't understand what is happening to him which doesn't help either. Just keep feeding the chicken and rice every few hours, and also try and make sure you keep his fluid levels up as well. Hopefully in a couple of days he should be showing good signs of improvement and you will be able to gently swap him back to his normal food, but don't rush it.

If you have any worries about him, go straight back to the vet and tell them you want them to look at him again. Also any questions ask away here and someone will give you some advice. Meanwhile give Chester a gentle hug from me, and one for yourself as you will need it too. teddy hug

Thank-you all so much you are very kind. You are right its sooooo hard, especially as he is so little and I am feeling helpless. I cant bear the thought of him hurting. Yes I have been in touch with the breeder and she assures me the rest of the litter are all doing well. I was also shocked at the tapeworm diagnosis as there has been no evidence of this and the breeders conditions were excellent. My mum says he may be allergic to the chicken, do you think thats possible? The vet said to keep him on it, then in a weeks time try him on dry food. I suppose its trial and error. At least he seems to be playing and energetic. Will see what the poo sample comes up with xxx

Well at least that is good to know that the breeders conditions were good. Personally I don't think that he could have an allergy towards chicken. I think it is just a case of being patient until it is through his system.

The fact he is playing and energetic is brilliant, it mean's he is fighting whatever the cause is, and is feeling OK in himself. I wouldn't have thought he was allergic to the chicken as is it a very bland meat. Personally I would stick to this and the rice, and hopefully he will settle down in the next couple of days.
