Hello from us
Hi we have a male 3 year old boy called Rory, he has lots of problems unfortunately health wise, Rory had a bladder stone removed last August which was made up of urate crystals on further investigation is was said he may have liver shunt, Rory has to have a low purine diet/special organic food, he also has to have lactulose 3 times per day and milk thistle to protect his liver. Rory may need surgery at some point but at the moment is a very happy playful and in himself well guy! He does have to have regular ultra sound scans and urine testing for crystals, which have been the only symptom so far, neurologically he is fine. Today we are going to meet our potential little girl she is 11 weeks old
Good to meet ya all!!!

Re: Hello from us
Hi there and a very warm welcome to the forum
It sounds as if Rory has only a mild form of liver shunt (if liver shunt is really the diagnosis) as he has got to 3 years old without major symptoms/problems - it usually rears its head in the first few months of life. Have the tests proven that this is the diagnosis? the good news is that lots of dogs can have an almost normal life with the simple addition of lactulose to their diet. I am glad that there are no neurological problems and I hope Rory continues to thrive.
Can't wait to see photos of both Rory and his new baby sister xxxx

Re: Hello from us
he has really high bile acids pre and post fasting was 400 the bladder stone prmpted the investigation, ultra sound scans were inconclusive, the next step would be the contrast media test but I will only do this if I go down the surgical route, however because he is so well in himself I cannot justify that at the moment as I don't want to put him at any risk and he took along time to recover from his bladder op Emily is our new little girl she has just arrived home and so far its going well! Thanks alot

Re: Hello from us
I am sorry to hear that but am glad he is doing so very well and long may he continue to do so He is going to wonder what has hit him in a few weeks when Emily starts ruling the roost with him but I can tell you from experience he will be one very happy little dog then too xxx

Re: Hello from us
Hi mumta2 and welcome to Whispers. It sounds like you have one very lucky little Rory to have such a caring family to look after him. Fingers crossed that everything works out well for him, it certainly sounds like he is happy in himself which is the important thing. I am sure he will grow to love his new little sister as well. I can't wait to see some photos of them together. Shih Tzus may only be small dogs, but they pack one heck of a lot of character and pleasure into those small bodies of theirs. And a fair dose of mischief as well!
