Keeping our babies cool

Hi Archie is my first Zhu. He doesnt really like the heat. We have a very cool kitchen with a tiled floor which he likes. I am walking him very early and very late and he seems happy enough. He is however getting very hot at night and sometimes wakes up panting. Even though he is crate trained I let him sleep on the bed. I give him the option of staying downstairs or sleeping upstairs and at night he always follows me to the bathroom, he cleans his teeth and then goes to bed. I think its too hot for him. He has access to water during the night. Any suggestions? I could shut him in the kitchen and force him to be in the cooler part of the house, however, he would no doubt express his dissatisfaction. Please do tell me if I am "pandering" to him too much!

I got a £15 Chillax cool mat at Pets at Home yesterday which somehow keeps cool. I've been putting my feet on it and it is cool. Ellie has been lying on it so it's possibly having some effect.

Mali & Tasha sleep with us in the bedroom.You could try putting a fan on in the room. We leave all the doors open and the top windows of our room open at night. We also have vertical blinds which we leave open, but close the curtains. That seems to be working for us. With the doors open they can wander about as it is a bungalow, so I leave there water in the kitchen.

Am I an idiot or what? I have two chillaxpads inthe car and I neverthought of bringing them into the house for bed time lmao

I have had a fan on allnight every day it has been hot in the bedroom for the three of us.
I think you can get pads for your own bed - saw them somewhere andif this weather keeps on I will be getting one lol!

I have to say didn't realise such a thing existed. So I went looking around the world wide web and found VioVet have them on offer for £10+ £1.95 p&p. I am tempted to get one for Tasha as she is the one that feels the heat more than Mali. What I want to know do your dogs use it ? I don't want to get one and find it is a waste of money. I know this heat won't last long but I could put it in the car for her afterwards.

i have been fairly lucky so far, no overheating/panting from the dogs. we have fans all over the house and even not allowed to open windows due to the pollen.

pippa seems to feel the heat but is more restless.

i am definatley going to look at those cool pads!

I have one of those coolpads for on the showtable. Was invaluable last saturday with the heat and they really liked it. But I have found that when on the floor at hoe they never lie on it. So I don't know if it ould work there?

Well it was really hot last night and I put two fans on in the bedroom and put the pad down. Isabella isn't hot and panting just scratching but JOsh was panting a lot. I tried to coax him to lie on it but he just ignored me. However when I woke up this morning he had worked out for himself where the coolest place was and was lying on it Very Happy

Don't forget everyone to make sure they can access water through the night xxxx

Thanks...I am having IT problems.. sorry if my reply comes on several times!!??? I have one on order via courier for quick delivery, he has been sleeping on wet t-towels recently. We are soooooo excited we have booked him on his first holiday to the seaside! we are more excited about taking him away for a week than we ever were when we went on safari or the maldives! we are going to Oxwich Bay, Gower on the basis that the area is very dog friendly, hope its not too hot. Chill pads will help though!

you should have a great time there... the gower is lovely ...and you will have loads of fun with him. I know I did when I first took Josh. This year both Josh Isabella me and mum are off to east yorkshire Very Happy

Mali is scratching too.I got her back on Topcoat last week but so far doesn't seem to be making much of a difference. Tasha just wants to sleep on the big thick mat that goes in her house, which I took out of there because it would have been too hot, I thought. I am not sure mine would use a cooling mat and I don't think this heat will last for too much longer. So could be a waste of money.

The Gower is beautiful. I would like to take ours on a small holiday, they normally go to kennels. Just to see how they would like it, just a couple of nights. We may try it in winter when we can stay in a cottage. I know some of the holiday companies in Pembrokeshire do a short break for £99 and it wouldn't be too far for us . About an hour in the a car. Enjoy.

I have ordered one of those chill pads for Daisy as there seems to be no let up with this hot weather. So far she seems to be coping fine with the heat, but we make sure not to take her out in the hottest part of the day and stick to early mornings and very late evenings for our walks.

At night Daisy is in her crate and if her mattress is in there then there isn't room for her water. So now I am taking the mattress out and just leaving a towel with her water in the crate and I also leave the fan on. However she doesn't seem to be very happy and just sits there looking at us as if to say "so where is my mattress then?". If I had one of those water bottles it would help as I could fix that on the inside of the crate but I haven't seen any decent ones in this country.

Reading about those chill pads reminded me that I have a chillow pillow of my own that I bought some years ago and haven't used for a long time. I finally found it and had to put some more water in it and will see if that works for me as I used to take it to bed and put my feet on it when it was very hot although I don't recall it being as good as I thought it would be, hence why I haven't used it in years.

I am trying to keep the house as cool as possible but it's not easy as our conservatory seems to be getting very hot. This morning the temperature in there was 40c which is very hot Shocked

On the water front I use the biggest size rabbit bottle with the ball on it only for night and attach it to the outside of the crate so they don't knock it over. Only use them at night thy are not expensive either 3 quid or so. U have to get the one with the largest ball.

Maggie Mae was a nightmare last night if u leave her crate open she walks around the kitchen barkin which makes daisy to bark then Henry. I can't wait for this chill pad to come lol

Thanks for the advice on chill pads. I now have two, i cleared the stock in two argos stores. Cheapest i have seen is ebay £14.99 and £2.99 postage.

I also ordered a chillow mini for my partner which is fab too. I did read that u are not suppose to empty the water out of them as u lose what ever the put in them. Would have liked the chillow for the dogs but not at £55 for a small lol!
