hello me lovelies

I thought i best introduce myself before i start asking questions so here goes...My name is Gemma and from tomorrow night i will officially be a proud mummy of a little boy shih tzu called Milo {i have chosen}

Me and o/h are so excited i cannot wait to bring him home to introduce him to my 4 boys who can't wait either but what's even more exciting my sister is having one of his brother's so our little boys will be able to play together and everything Smile

Now i am a first time owner of a Shih Tzu and done some research on this breed but i would love some hints and tips from you because your experience is valuable and just want to do the best by my little boy...i would really appreciate all the help i can get!!

I can't wait to get to know you all and your poochies and share experiences with you all...

Thank you simbalove...actually could you give me a bit of advice please regards feeding.
The breeder is feeding the pups bakers puppy complete and the odd bit of pedigree chum puppy meat but my question is...is the food she is feeding them ok or should i be thinking of changing it, if so what too???

Hi,

Welcome to the forum. There are lots here more qualified than me but I would get him off Bakers as soon as possible. It's full of additives.

It took me a while and lots of trial and error to find a food that suited both my boys. For the moment we are settled on Iams' it's not the best but seems to be a compromise between what suits them both.

I would try Burns or royal canine.

Enjoy your puppy! Time really does fly!

There is so many foods dry wet raw it's crazy

Few that I have tried but the only advise I go with is the healthiest u can afford which u are able to feed for the rest of there lives cause u can start off feeding the best money can buy to begin with as soon can't keep it up.

Some foods that r good And I have tried
Burns mini bites
Trophy foods not sure if they do puppy
Lily's kitchen
Royal cann shih tzu ( comes in junior for pups)
Weinwrights ( pets at home brand) found this good because if pup hates it u can take it back opened and they will give u money back good for the trail days Also not so bad on pocket

I have only tried these

The better food the less u feed so end up saving more
I have still got half a bag of shih tzu 24 royal cann ( adult) and have ha it since Xmas the big bag they do so it's worth the money

http://www.whichdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-directory.php

Hi Gemma. We were talking about this on here last week and Carol posted this for us. As you will see it shows you all the dog foods and what is in them. where it is shown in the RED these are the things which are not very good, as Liz says some are more expensive then others. But then again some have more of the good ingredients in them and that is what is reflected in the price. So you will have to choose the one you think will be best for you. Also you will need to mix it in with the one the breeder gives you, so you won't upset his tummy. Hope this is of some help to you. Hi Gemma and welcome to the forum, it's great to have you here. I expect you are waaaay too excited to be sat reading the forum this morning, but I will give you my advice about food anyway. I would probably leave Milo on the same as the breeder is already using for a bit because everything in Milo's life is going to change tonight (I don't mean this in a nasty way, but he isn't going to understand what is happening to him at first), and to keep this constant would be a good idea. Once he has settled in, you can of course change his food to whatever you like and he will eat.

It sounds like he is going to be one very spoilt and happy pup with so many people to play with. Your sons will love having a shih tzu around, but please buy a pair of earplugs for yourself as there will lots of squealing and joyful laughter watching the antics of a shih tzu pup I can assure you. You would never believe how much mischief they can get up to! lol!

As others say get off the Bakers ASAP. I am a raw food fanatic since I had Josh but there are some good suggestions above if you don't want to go down that road Very Happy

Hello Gemma and a belated welcome from me and my two girls Mali and Tasha. I am sorry to say this but how any so called breeder can feed that rubbish to little furbabies I don't know. I am sure most have said this above just take it slowly and get off that Bakers and even if you choose another kibble there are plenty suitable for a Shih Tzu. I am slowly going on to all Natures Menu having tried various Kibble types only for mine to get fed up with it. I have decided that they will always eat Natures Menu and there are various ones I will add the link. They are also sending out booklets 'Why Raw Food I am expecting my copy this week so I will have a good read of it and comment later. I hope you have your little furbaby now, and look forward to sleepless nights for a while!!! Not many lol

hi piglet from me too.

I totally agree with what has already been said about the food your puppy is currently on, doesn't seem to be a high quality one but as has already been said it is best to keep them on the same food at first as they are used to it and it's one less change to them when you first get them.

Our shih tzu is just over a year old and when we got her she was on Nature Diet and was fine on it till she seemed to develop an intolerance to something in it. We now feed her a grain free diet and she seems to be fine on that. My experience is that they can be fussy little things when it comes to food.

Yes tell me about it I am changing mine to Natures Menu as that is the one thing they will always eat no matter what. They were brilliant on Trophy for about a year but then both of them went through a phase of not wanting to eat kibble, and Mali flatly refuses to eat kibble so I will see how long this fad lasts. I still have some Trophy left in the bag which I suppose Tasha will eat I don't want to waste it. I still think Trophy is a brilliant food they did so well on it at the end of the day they will only eat what they want to eat.
I must apologise Lyn for missing Daisy's 1st Birthday it has been hectic here and still is. And now we have the decorator decorating the Kitchen, Dining Room and Lounge he's called 'Hubby' so place is in a mess. Don't like mess !!! and poor girls are wondering why they are being fed in different places too. teddy hug

I changed my puppies' foods over straight away without any problem... Josh because I had to find something that suited his tummy and Isabella because there was no way she was going to eat the kibble she came with when Josh was eating raw meat!

It is called Raw is Best.

Post by Mercedes55 Thu May 02, 2013 1:00 pm

I am still struggling to find the right food for Daisy. Our old labrador has been on Hills Science WD since a puppy and is nearly 14yrs old so although I know it's a crap food it doesn't seem to have done her any harm.

However I always said to OH if we ever get another dog I would go the raw food way. However Daisy is now just over a year old and she is still on commercial pet food and I could kick myself.

Right now she is on Taste of the Wild Pacific Salmon with a bit of Purina HA thrown in as we are still crossing her over from the Purina elimination diet. She was quite keen on the Taste of the Wild at first but now I have trouble getting her to eat it and she was 5.8kg a little while ago and is now only 5.5kg.

We think she is grain intolerant as she was so ill when she was on the home cooked chicken and rice. I've looked at the Nature's Menu and am quite tempted but don't want to create any problems with her tummy again.
