Hello there
Hi All
My name's Siobhan and I'm a newbie Shih Tzu owner.
Lottie came to live with me on Saturday and is just over 4 months old. She's a little beauty.
I'd really appreciate some advice on house training as she's not nearly there. I have house trained a puppy before but he had never been owned by anyone else.
Her last owners lived in a flat with no garden so she was taken out first thing in the morning and last thing at night and she had just started going on paper during the day but not all the time.
I have a garden and have been trying to train her to go there but also have paper down but she's not having any of it.
She's having 3 walks a day and does go then but there are lots of accidents in between.
Even when I take her outside, she'll do nothing and then as soon as we come back in she goes.
She also tries to bite me when I groom her (I am doing it gently) and this evening had the full eye contact lunging at me and snapping at my shirt.
I'm aware that she's probably missing her other owners and is probably a bit stressed and asserting her authority so any advice on this type of behaviour would really be appreciated.
Thank you
Siobhan

Re: Hello there
Hi Siobhan
Welcome to the forum. When you take Lottie outside stay with her tell her WEE WEE or BE QUICK or BE CLEAN which ever you chose. as soon as she has finished, praise her and give her a small treat. If she dosn't do anything outside when she comes back in, take her out again shortly after. Also take up all the papers from inside the house,If she dose wee in the house use 50/50 water and white viniger mixed together, this will remove the odor. You need to show her that you want her to use the garden as a toilet not your house.
ALSO When your grooming her put her on a table lie her on her side on the table. you have to train her to do this as grooming is a life time commitment ALWAYS have a small treat for her, and tell her she's a good girl. They say you can get a dog to do almost anything if they get a treat for it so good luck with her, I know you will get there in the end.Maxine x

Re: Hello there
Hi Siobhan and welcome to the forum, it's great to have you here.
Did you have her from the litter, or are you the second family to have owned Lottie? From the way I have read your post I think you may be her second family since leaving her Mum in which case she must be a very confused, scared, poor little puppy.
Lottie must be confused which isn't helping with the house training, but she will get there eventually I can assure you. She has only been with you a couple of days, so life is all stress and change at the minute. Give her a chance to settle and things will get easier. She is still a very young baby and needs to learn the rules of life, one being that you don't wee indoors. Start again from scratch, by taking her out every time she wakes, after a meal, and when you have been playing. Stay outside with her until she does something and give her plenty of reward, a treat if she is food orientated or lots of verbal praise, or a quick play with one toy you keep for rewards if that is what she likes.
Any questions, just ask away and someone will soon be along to give you a hand.

Re: Hello there
Hi and welcome to the forum Siobhan and Lottie...
like others have said she is probably a bit confused and scared at the moment...just be a little patient and plenty of cuddles when she comes to you so she gets to trust you but as for the house training like lilly bell and sujay have given great advice on going back to basics and before you know it she will be house trained!!

Re: Hello there
Hi and welcome from us too, would also just like to say that at four months she is still a baby and that none if mine were house trained very early I think small dogs can take a little longer. Rosie is just coming up six months and it is only in the last couple of weeks that she will ask to go out, she was not having accidents but only because I was taking her out frequently, she is told to do wee wees and she knows she gets a treat when she has done one, I think It is getting to know their routine as much
As anything, but she will get their in the end. Now if anyone has any ideas how to stop Rosie wanting to eat every dandelion she seeswhen we are out walking that would be great lol x

Well, at least it is better than other certain things that shih tzu are prone to eat!

Re: Hello there
...dandelions are good for the urinary tract but if she is eating them outside it is a worry because you never know if they have been sprayed with something
I will bump my house training section up for you but as others have said she is still a teeny baby and with the added confusion of now having a garden and being in a strange environment you need to go right back to the beginning. i don't think having pads down in the house is a problem - in fact I had to use them for Josh when he came to work as apuppy and it does mean that if you take your dog somewhere you can take a pad with you as back up
At 4 months she will still be doing lots of little wees so its every time she wakes up, everytime she plays. eats or drinks, whenever she gets excited and lots of times in between that you need to take her out to the garden. she may also be doing wees out of insecurity because she is in a new environment but that will get better as she realises she is with you to stay.
As for grooming I tend to make it playtime as well for my puppies and also have a lot of very very small treats to give them each time they have let me do something. Remember that if you have caught a knot no matter how small it will hurt and some dogs will try to bite to stop you but I would bet my bottom dollar that she is treating the grooming time as rough and tumble time as she would with her litter mates and this play at 4 months can be quite savage. So encourage a little bit ofplay then do a little bit of grooming and treat. Make sure you have her on a table as this will help

Re: Hello there
Thank you all so much for all the tips.
Sujay, yes I'm her second owner.
We've had a good day potty wise, just one accident in the hall this morning, but that was my fault for not getting out quickly enough and this evening she actually went on the pad by the garden door and I was there to see it and reward her.
We've had 3 walks and loads of playtime today...I'm exhausted but she's still full of beans!
Now to groom with treats

Re: Hello there
Sounds like you had a good pee day, well done. The key is keeping a very close eye on Lottie, and you will soon start to recognise the signs that she is looking to go. It is as much a learning curve for you as well as Lottie.
It sounds like she has had lots of fun today which is the main thing, she will learn through play and that is all she wants to do at this stage. It is not surprising that you end up exhausted, but a few minutes rest, and Lottie is ready to go again.
It won't take her long to learn the routine, it must be upsetting for her at the minute, but all the work you put in now will pay off in the long run when you have a gorgeous well behaved dog.
