New breed new questions
Hi there everyone!
I am a new mum to my lovely 2 year old shih tzu Toby and I'm also mum to my pug Archie ! I seen an add one day for a little shih tzu that was being bullied by an older house dog, I picked up some toys on my way to collect him that same day! To the shock of my partner when I walked up to meet him from work
I just have a few little questions, my little tzu sneezes all the time! Especially in the morning when he first wakes he does a few huge sneezes ! Do we have any idea if this is slightly normal or do I need to get my baby tested for allergies? I have had him checked over at the vet and they were happy but this amount of sneezing isn't normal!
I also noticed this morning that on his back left paw, his little nail and the surrounding skin is loose, like really loose, it's pink aswell, not black like his other pads on his feet. Has anyone ever come across this?

Re: New breed new questions
Hi Jaydelouise and welcome to Whispers. Do not worry about the sneezes it is quite usual for Shih Tzu's to do this. My youngest Tasha who is 3 years old does it quite often especially first thing in the morning, like waking me up at 5am this morning trying to jump up on the bed.
My other one Mali very rarely sneezes. Are you talking about his Dew claw when you are talking about the nail? I am not sure about that. Do you mean the nail is a white nail and you can see part of it is pink. If it is, then the pink bit is the blood running through the claw, and when trimming the claw you must never trim past the white part other wise you will draw blood. They do tend to be a bit loose(the Dew claws) There are a lot of people on here that may be able to help you more with this when they come on here later. BTW we would love to see photo's of your furbaby.

Re: New breed new questions
AS Carol has said you are describing perfectly normal shih tzu traits - some even talk by sneezing. If he has trouble catching his breath then you can place a finger over his nosttrils to encourage him to breathe through his mouth and clear the mucus. However they often sneeze for no apparent reason and as long as your vet is happy then there is nothing to really worry about.
Pugs and Shih Tzu get on very well together as a rule - they were bred together in the Chinese Palaces alongside the Pekes
You are also describing the dew claw. Some dogs have them on all four feet others not. Some breeders have them removed shortly after birth but my dogs have always had them. You need to keep an eye onthese claws as they donot reach the ground and therefore don't wear down. Make sure they do not curl back and grow into the skin. The best way to prevent this is to clipoff the end every time you bath him/groom him especially if the nail is black and you can't see the blood flow which goes part way down the nail (and is easier to see in white nails). If you are not confident of doing this your vet will clip them for you (I can nol onger see well enough to clip my dogs so the vet does it for me).
Looking forward to seeing photos or your chinese pair - and welcome to the forum and the shih tzu fanatics club

Re: New breed new questions
Thanks for the response guys much appreciated. I feel 100% better about the sneezing situation. However, my pug does have his dew claws and I am confident in cutting and managing them, it is just that Toby only has this one (maybe dew claw) on his right back paw. It is odd in colour, i shall take a picture to show you. I may just be being over cautious but i would still very much like your experience and advice.
On a seperate note, here are my two fur babies Archie pug was born without a tail.

Re: New breed new questions
They both look adorable. I am also very fond of the Pug. If I had to choose another breed it is probably the one I would go for. Toby's colouring is very much like my Tasha. Are you saying the Dew claw that may be a problem is way down his paw on the right and loooks a pinky red colour. I can't see it very well. I think if yo are concerned I would pop him into the Vet's again just for piece of mind. Or if you could take a closer photo of the claw someone may be able to help on here.

Hi Jaydelouise and welcome to Whispers. It does look like a dew claw to me as well, but if you in the least bit worried ask your vet to have a look at it for you. As others have said the sneezing is quite normal and nothing to worry about.
I bet your partner had a shock when you walked up with Toby! They both look lovely together and I am sure they will be fantastic friends.

Re: New breed new questions
Thank you again, you are all great on here!
I have another query, I noticed that Toby barks when I am out, we have tried leaving the television on and to casually leave the house and come in as to make it a normal daily occurrence and not to fuss around him for 10minutes before leaving and 10minutes after we are in, but as my neighbour has just informed me he still barks from when we leave to when we cOme home. I'm sure that it is separation anxiety and I know there is no quick fix but does anyone have any more advise for me?

Has he been used to a cage at all? Although I am not a fan of cages they do seem to work for some people. You could try putting him in one when you go out. Others on here may have more suggestions that you could consider. I usually leave a radio on if they don't go with us.
Re: New breed new questions
It sounds like separation anxiety to me. I would suggest just calmly walking out for a few seconds at first and gradually increase the time you are gone. As Carol says also leave the radio on quietly so he has some noise around him. Do you know if Toby did this in his previous house?

Re: New breed new questions
I'm not sure if he did this in his old house, all the previous owner told me was that he was great when he left him In to go to work. I don't like the use of cages, especially of we are out for more than an hour I definately wouldn't want to leave my baby in a cage. We have been working hard with him over these past two and a half weeks but we go back to work on Wednesday and he wil be left in for approx 4-5hours depending on our alternating shifts. Luckily I am back on annual leave at the end of the month so we will hopefully have this baby settled in !
One more thing!! My poor baby was sick this morning when he woke, he is shaking when he breathes in now! He was fine on his walk but is in a super cuddly mood today, I know I'm a Nervous new mummy but I just want to make sure he is okay!
You wouldn't believe I'm a nurse and save lives everyday! I panic more about my dogs than I do human beings!

I agree 4/5 hours is too long to leave Toby caged. As I said I am not a fan of them but others swear by them.I used to go to collect my girls from the groomers and they were in a cage then and that is the only time they have ever been in a cage. That is one of the reasons I groom them my self now. You say he was sick this morning , this is poossibly what we call ' empty tummy syndrome' I give mine a plain biscuit when I get up which is anytime from 5.30am. I guess he was just bringing up Bile was he? It is something Shih Tzu's do only occasionally . By giving him a biscuit this will help.
Re: New breed new questions
Ahhh my little tzu just started fitting on the stairs and he slipped down about 6 of the stairs before I could grab him! He fitted for about 30 seconds at the bottom before coming round! My poor baby! My vet said to monitor him and keep a diary of his fits! He was rolling his little head! ( he is walking around fine now but is just a little tired!
He did just bring up bile this morning, but he ate his dinner about 9pm last night which is super late for him. So I thought maybe it was that? Or this could all be linked to his fit? My poor baby! My pug is epileptic an the vet bills are massive! I hope to god my baby is okay!
Has anyone come across this?

Re: New breed new questions
Shih Tzu tummy is a very common thing though vets tend to say it doesn't exist. Simba suffers from this and brings up bile usually first thing in the morning every couple of weeks or so. He has a biscuit before he goes to bed and eats his breakfast once he has had his bile up. At first it used to worry us, but we are used to it now and don't worry.
More of a concern is the fit that your poor baby has just had. I have never had a dog have a fit, but you did the right thing by contacting the vet straight away. I wouldn't have thought the late supper was anything to do with the fit. It could be he has just the one fit so nothing will need to be done, or if he does have more then obviously they will need investigating. The most important thing is for you to remain calm and allow him to recover from the fit. Give him a gentle hug from me
Do you have any idea why he was rehomed? Were you told the truth or do think they knew the poor dog was having fits and maybe couldn't afford the vets bills?

Re: New breed new questions
I have been giving little Toby millions of cuddles and one can certainly be off you
I have spoken to the previous owner and he said that Toby has never been sick or fitted with him, he said quote "he is as fit as a fiddle". He has asked me to keep him informed and said that he was really upset by the news. Toby was rehomed due to the other household 7yr old Lhasa apso bullying him. They had Toby frOm when he was little so I'm not sure why the other dog had only just started bullying him. But I'm happy to give my little man a loving home.

Re: New breed new questions
I am not too sure whether you can actually believe what his previous owner has told you. I would suggest you keep an eye on Toby regarding the fits just in case but I would think he has knocked his head when he fell (of course you won't know this unless he never has another fit). My friend Tracy had something similar when oscar fell off the back of the settee and she was scared to death until she was sure he was ok.
If you get a large cage where you can leave water and maybe a Kong then I would seriously suggest you use one to try and help with the separation anxiety. I am not saying to leave him in one for ever but dogs feel more secure in a small den like situation so it should help with the anxiety until he gets used to you coming and going and hten you can leave the door of it open and will find he goes in to sleep. obviously when you are then home he can have lots of love and attention and won't feel badly done by. You also have the security of knowing where he is while you are out and know he cannot harm himself.
My dogs don't get locked in their cages now they are settled but Josh will go in his when I go out as he feels secure in there.
as to the lhasa bullying - it probably started as Toby started to become a mature male... that is usually when the problems begin if there is a dominant dog in the house.
I am a bit concerned abouthim being tired - which also smacks of concussion - keep an eye on him and if you are worried at all get him into the vet as he may well have knocked his skull (or if he is sick or fits again or you cannot rouse him) xxxxx

Re: New breed new questions
I unfortunately don't have the money for a cage big enOugh for me to feel comfortable to leave him in. I will however buy a safety gate so he will just have the space under my stairs in my hall and that way he also can't jump up when we come in as he has a right loud bark on him !
My little man has ate his dinner and seems much brighter this afternoon! He has been running around the house and barking away! Like his usual little self !

Argos do a Puppy gate which is better than a baby gate. I think they are about £30 but Aldi had one of their special offers of a cage at £24.99 yesterday which should be big enough. Another idea would be E Bay for a gate or Gumtree. The puppy gate has narrower bars. I have one which used to go in between our Utility and kitchen which we now only put up if we leave them at home. We are very fortunate as I work from home and hubby is retired so they almost always come with us. Thank you for saying about Tasha, I am biased she is related to Santosha Thunderbolt who won Best of Breed at Crufts. His Great Great Grand father is Tasha's Great Grand father. She is very quiet compared to Mali my other one who can play by herself very often but Tasha hasn't got a clue about play no matter how I have tried with her. Tasha was looking quite scruffy in that photo she has since had a tidy up.
Re: New breed new questions
Toby is much better in himself today, he has been playing with his toys had a lovely walk, he has followed me round like crazy as i cleaned the house this morning and has been giving me millions of snuggles!
I am just on my way to Argos now to collect my gate! We have been in and out the house like crazy today to try and get him used to us going for short periods! So hopefully he will feel more secure soon with the use of te gate and having his own little den like area under the stairs!
Sands it sounds like you have some very wonderful fur babies
I am already addicted and would love another one! But I shall most definately wait for my lovely Toby to settle in first, not to mention the fact that I can't surprise my partner again too soon!

Re: New breed new questions
Glad Toby is better today. I wish I was as brave as you in getting another as a surprise for your partner. I don't somehow think I would be so lucky he would probably tell me to take it back. Although I would really like another. Tasha was quite sick this morning and has slept most of the day but that is just something the Shih Tzu's do. So I am not worried at all. Good luck with Toby tomorrow if you are going back to work. I am sure he will be fine. Re: New breed new questions
I am so glad Toby is better today and i do think that he concussed himself when he fell. sadly some of them think they can do anything. A gate is a great idea and the understairs den should be perfect. It is early days for him just yet and whatever his past has been the move from one home to another is quite traumatic and I should think that he would have worried you were going forever. practice is the way forward and one day very soon he will trust you enough not to bark when you are out.
Josh never barked or cried till I got home when he was a baby and then he would run up me almost plastering me with licks and kisses. I was so upset the first time he just opened one eye and said "Oh its you is it?" and gave me no reaction at all. I felt very unloved
He came to work with me for 6 years. recently I have been off after back surgery and now I am back in work he has gone back to making a great fuss of me when I go home! Bless Him! Isabella on the other hand couldn't give a toss!!

Josh is a soppy boy who loves his Mam, where as Isabella is a little troublemaker who still loves you underneath, but doesn't show it!

Re: New breed new questions
She loves me to bits - but then she loves anyone who will have her She nearly klled herself this morning. She wanted me to get up at 6.30 so when I turned over she started chewing my new slippers. I took them off her and went back to bed and I had had my fan on as I was a little warm in bed when all of a sudden there was a boom and the fan stopped. I switched the light on to see Isabella with an "OOPS" expression on her face and did think for a second she had had a shock but I think not now... fortunately it was the label around the cable she had chewed and managed to pull the plug from the socket!
