Turkey Sticks (Turkey Chews)

Post by simbalove on Fri Jul 24, 2009 11:12 am

Take some thin sliced turkey breast and cut into strips, place them on a very lightly greased baking tray and cook on 180 for 20 minutes then turn the oven down very low and cook for a further hour. Leave to cool and hey presto - not quite as hard as the chicken breast/jerky but chewy all the same. Have kept for almost a week in an airtight container with no problems and Josh thinks they are lush teddy hug

I made these on Friday but with chicken breast. I sliced the chicken breast really thinly and then cooked it on quite a high heat for around 15-20 minutes, then turned it down really low for about an hour/hour and a half - they came out exactly like the shop bought chicken jerky (but obviously without the hazards). Sasha and Monty loved them. And I tested Sasha's urine today to see if it was the method of cooking which was spilling the glucose into the urine, and it was all negative, so these home made chicken/turkey jerky treats are definitely healthy!

Great news Kirsty - I just made my second (larger) batch of turkey ones for Josh and was going to try them with chicken next - just the turkey breast was on special offer in the coop! I nearly fell over Josh as I backed out of the oven with the tray lol!

They're definitely top of my list now! I suppose you could make them with cheaper cuts of chicken or turkey, if you were willing to strip the meat from the bone and got half decent pieces?
